Recycled Rubber Mulch - The Safety Surface for School Playgrounds

Rubber Mulch as Safety PlaygroundTwo school playgrounds in Port Clinton/Ohio recently resurfaced their play areas with recycled rubber. School officials report they have seen fewer injuries after students fall from the playground equipment than when the school used pebbles to cover the ground…

Nearly 70% of playground injuries result from children falling onto the surface below the equipment. The mulch´s cushioning is the main reason the school district chose to use it.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends using rubber for playground mulch, tracks and playing fields because its resiliency decreases the amount of injuries to children and athletes. EPA testing showed rubber mulch is not toxic and is not considered flammable under the Federal Hazardous Substance Act. Rubber also is included in the National Program for Playground Safety´s list of materials acceptable for use as playground surface.
